During Barack Obama’s time in the White House, he allowed millions of people to go on welfare and freeload off of the hard work of American taxpayers. Disturbed by what was happening, the great state of Maine decided to fight back in an epic way.
US News reported that Republican Gov. Paul LePage passed a law requiring drug tests for certain welfare recipients with drug convictions who score high on a substance-use screening tool. This law would ensure that American tax dollars would not be used by welfare recipients to buy drugs.
The program hopes that by stripping welfare benefits from those who test positive for drugs or fail to show up for their scheduled screenings, the state can drive addicts to treatment centers.
“We are moving through methodically so that we don’t inadvertently test somebody that we shouldn’t be testing,” said Bethany Hamm, director of Maine’s Office for Family Independence. “It is important for us to make sure that we are doing all we can to help these families and get them back into a place where they can achieve self-sufficiency and get out of poverty.”
Within a year of LePage’s reforms being enacted, the number of able-bodied adults on food stamps had dropped to 4,500 and has continued to decline.
